Staying in Kaleiçi means waking up in the oldest layer of Edirne. Kaleiçi (literally "inside the castle") is the historic quarter that lay within the walled fortress in Roman and Byzantine times, known today for its right-angled streets and its wooden and stone houses. Komşu Konak stands on the outer edge of the quarter at İzmir Caddesi No 18: the Ali Paşa Bazaar is about 5 minutes and the Selimiye Mosque 12–15 minutes away on foot.
What kind of quarter is Kaleiçi?
Kaleiçi takes its name from the fortress of the Roman city founded as Hadrianopolis. Most of the walls no longer stand; the best-known surviving piece is the Macedonian Tower in the north-eastern corner of the quarter. Wooden floors and a clock were added to the tower in 1867, and for many years it was called the "Clock Tower". The excavation area around it can now be visited as an urban archaeology park.
Today's street layout is more recent. After the great fire of the early 20th century, the quarter was rebuilt on a grid of streets crossing at right angles, following a plan drawn up in 1908. That is why it is hard to get lost in Kaleiçi: the streets run straight, and on the corners houses with wooden bay windows stand next to stone-walled buildings. The Great Synagogue (1907), rebuilt in the same period, and the façades of Maarif Caddesi are the most visible traces of this layer.
Where to stay in Edirne: Kaleiçi or another district?
Where to stay in Edirne depends on the purpose of your trip. On a short cultural visit most of the day is spent between the Selimiye, the Old Mosque, the Bedesten and the bazaars, so choosing a district within walking distance of this line saves time. Kaleiçi lies just south-west of it; you can park once and explore the city on foot.
The table below compares the districts from a visitor's point of view. All our options are on the Edirne accommodation page.
| District | Best for | Access to the historic centre |
|---|---|---|
| Kaleiçi | Cultural trips, weekend breaks, travellers who like to walk | Bazaars and Selimiye within walking distance |
| Around Selimiye and the bazaar | Staying right next to the monuments | Walking distance; heavier traffic around |
| Karaağaç | Riverside, the Lausanne Monument, towards Pazarkule | About 3–4 km from the centre; car or public transport needed |
| Newer parts of the city | Guests arriving by car or on business | Mostly 5–15 minutes by car |
Places within walking distance of Kaleiçi
Most of Edirne's most visited buildings lie within a 1-kilometre circle of the guesthouse. The distances in the table were measured as the crow flies between the guesthouse's map location and the coordinates of each building; the walking route along the streets is slightly longer. Times are approximate at a relaxed pace.
For a one-day sequence, the natural route runs from the bazaar to the Old Mosque and on to the Selimiye; on the way back you come down to Kaleiçi along Saraçlar Caddesi and Maarif Caddesi.
| Place | As the crow flies | On foot |
|---|---|---|
| Ali Paşa Bazaar and Saraçlar Caddesi | about 350 m | about 5 min |
| Macedonian Tower | about 390 m | about 5–7 min |
| Great Synagogue (Maarif Caddesi) | about 510 m | about 7–9 min |
| Old Mosque and Bedesten | about 630 m | about 8–10 min |
| Selimiye Mosque | about 950 m | about 12–15 min |
| Meriç Bridge | about 2 km | about 25–30 min |

What does it feel like to stay in Kaleiçi?
In the morning the streets are quiet; people coming back from the bakery, neighbours sweeping their doorsteps and children walking to school set the rhythm of the quarter. As the day goes on, Saraçlar Caddesi and the bazaar side come alive, and by late afternoon the grid streets calm down again. Staying in Kaleiçi you live both: by day you are in the middle of the city, at night in the middle of a neighbourhood.
The red-and-white façade and shuttered wooden windows of Komşu Konak are part of this fabric. Through the brick arch you find a lawned courtyard, a vine arbour and swings; the noise of the street stays outside the gate.
How much does accommodation in Kaleiçi cost?
Around Kaleiçi, room rates per night range from about 2,000 to 8,000 Turkish lira depending on the season and demand (October 2026). Weekdays and winter months are closer to the lower end; weekends, religious holidays, spring and Kırkpınar week push prices towards the upper end. Always confirm the current price before you travel.
Prices are usually given per room per night; whether breakfast is included is the item that changes a comparison the most. With us breakfast is included with every stay; ask with your dates and number of guests and we send the current price the same day. Budget tips are on our Edirne budget stay page.
| What affects the price | Effect |
|---|---|
| Day | Friday and Saturday nights are usually higher than weekdays |
| Period | Religious holidays, Kırkpınar week and spring are the busiest periods |
| Room type | A balcony, a bathtub and more square metres raise the nightly rate |
| Breakfast | Whether it is included changes the total noticeably |
| Number of nights | The average nightly rate may drop for longer stays; ask with your dates |
The practical side of the edge of Kaleiçi
The guesthouse is not in the middle of the narrow inner lanes but on İzmir Caddesi. If you arrive by car you can pull up on the street without entering the lanes; finding a space on the street or nearby is usually easy. There is no private car park, but this edge of the quarter makes arriving with luggage simple.
From Istanbul the drive is about 232 km and takes 2.5–3.5 hours depending on traffic; the Kapıkule border gate is about 17–19 km from the centre. If you let us know your arrival time in advance, we can arrange a late check-in.

Evenings in Kaleiçi: a city you walk home through
The best-loved part of staying in Kaleiçi is the evening. After dinner you walk back without waiting for a taxi; the pedestrian part of Saraçlar Caddesi and the illuminated dome of the Selimiye are the best-known stops for a short walk after a meal. At night the grid streets grow quiet, and the courtyard of the guesthouse is ready for the last tea of the day.
For a coffee and dessert break in the courtyard, see our Edirne old town cafe page.

Who is a stay in Kaleiçi for?
Kaleiçi is ideal for a weekend break, a cultural trip or a 1–3 night city tour. Travellers who want to walk back after dinner and see the streets empty early in the morning are happy here. If a large number of rooms, a 24-hour reception or covered parking is your priority, a larger property may suit you better.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for sightseeing; in summer the shade of the courtyard matters at midday, in winter the glass-roofed hall and the indoor lounge.
