As a henna night (kına gecesi) venue in Edirne, Komşu Konak gives the bride and her close circle room to spend the night before the wedding in the historic courtyard in Kaleiçi, in the light of the lanterns and the red-and-white façade. Instead of a crowded hall there is a courtyard with the warmth of a home; the henna tray, the seating circle and the refreshment table are set up here. All our event options are on our Edirne event venue page.
The henna night tradition in Edirne
The henna night is a rite of passage in many regions of Anatolia and Thrace, symbolising the bride's leaving her family home, at which the women come together. The Edirne records on the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Kültür Portalı note that traditional weddings in the region lasted two nights and three days and that the first night was the henna night. Today most families fit this tradition into a single evening; applying the henna, folk songs and the circle formed around the bride are still the heart of the night.
Families decide which tradition is followed and how. We prepare the space, light and timing according to these choices, making room for the tradition to unfold in its own way.
The flow of a henna night at the guesthouse
A henna night that starts after dinner usually follows this order; we change the details together according to the family's tradition.
- Welcome: guests are welcomed by the family at the courtyard gate, and tea and coffee are served under the arbour.
- Conversation and fun: the women form a circle on the lawn; the family brings its own music and folk songs.
- The bride's entrance: the bride comes into the courtyard in her henna veil, accompanied by her family.
- Applying the henna: in many families a henna tray with candles is carried around the bride, and the henna is applied by a family elder.
- Refreshments: sweet and savoury plates, or a dinner table at a henna night with a meal, are served.
- Closing: souvenir photos are taken, and the leftover henna is handed out to guests.
Set-up options for an Edirne henna night
The most important thing at a henna night is a seating arrangement in which the bride is in the middle and everyone can see her. Each area of the guesthouse provides this with a different atmosphere.
- Lawned courtyard: for a wide seating circle and the bride's chair on summer evenings.
- Vine arbour: for the refreshment table and the tables where the elders sit.
- Glass-roofed section: semi-covered; against the chill on spring and autumn evenings.
- Indoor lounge: a warm setting for winter henna nights, with stone and brick walls, a wooden ceiling and a crystal chandelier.
Evening hours, light and sound
A henna night often moves into the evening. The courtyard lighting and lanterns, together with the candles on the henna tray, complete the light of the night. Because of our overnight guests and the neighbourly fabric of Kaleiçi, we decide the volume and the end time together in advance.
We do not have a permanent stage or DJ set-up. We make room for the music the family prefers, such as folk songs with a tambourine (tef) and a goblet drum (darbuka), or henna songs played through a speaker.
Henna tray, decoration and refreshments: what we plan together
The henna, the tray and the bride's henna outfit are usually prepared by the family. We plan the table layout, the seating circle, the refreshment menu, the cake service and the photo corner. Red tones naturally match the guesthouse façade; a few red ribbons, candle lanterns and a flower-decorated bride's chair are usually enough decoration.
A garden wedding the day after the henna night can be planned in the same courtyard; details are on our Edirne garden wedding page.
When is a henna night held, and how long does it last?
The henna night is traditionally held the night before the wedding. Today many families move it a few days or a week earlier to reduce the tiredness of the wedding day. A henna night that starts after dinner usually lasts three to four hours.
When setting the date, it is worth considering the relatives coming from afar and the bride's preparation schedule together. If the henna night and the wedding are in the same week, the guesthouse rooms can be reserved for the bride and close family; as the number of rooms is limited, we suggest letting us know the date early.

Henna night costs and a preparation list
The budget of a henna night is made up of the venue, refreshments, henna supplies, outfits and decoration. There is a clear difference between a henna night with a meal and one with sweet and savoury refreshments; the number of guests is the item that affects the total most. In Edirne, per-guest prices for events with a meal are, according to listings, in a band close to weddings; get a quote from the venue for an exact price.
The list below gathers the things most often forgotten in the preparations. At the quote stage we put in writing who will bring what.
- Henna, a henna tray, candles and gloves
- The bride's henna outfit and veil
- Music: a tambourine, a drum or a speaker playlist
- Refreshments: sweet and savoury plates or a dinner table
- Decoration: red ribbons, lanterns, a flower-decorated bride's chair
- Henna pouches to hand out to guests

Entertainment and games at a henna night
The entertainment at a henna night mostly comes from the family's own tradition: folk songs, verses (mani), circle dances and henna songs sung while circling the bride. Some families also add small games for the bride and her friends, a memory book or a photo corner. The courtyard lawn suits forming a circle, and the glass-roofed section suits the refreshment table.
We decide the volume and end time in advance, with our overnight guests and the neighbourly fabric of Kaleiçi in mind.

Rain plan and accommodation for guests
Even when we plan a henna night in the courtyard in spring and autumn, we keep a second layout ready under the glass roof and in the indoor lounge; we make the final decision together during the day based on the weather.
Relatives coming from afar and the bride can stay at the same address at the end of the night. Breakfast between 09:00 and 13:00 is included with the stay; as the number of rooms is limited, we suggest asking together with your henna night date.
