Staying Near Karaağaç, Edirne: From Kaleiçi to the Far Bank of the River

Some people looking to stay in Karaağaç want to stay in the district itself; others only go there for the Lausanne Monument, the historic station and the Meriç riverside. Either way, Kaleiçi makes a good base: our guesthouse is at İzmir Caddesi No 18, Mithat Paşa Mahallesi, about 3–4 km from Karaağaç and a 25–30 minute walk from the Meriç Bridge.

Where is Karaağaç, and why visit?

Karaağaç is the district on the west bank of the Meriç River that was left to Turkey under the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923; today it is a neighbourhood of the central district of Edirne. Its symbol is the old Edirne Station designed by Mimar Kemalettin. According to the Governorship of Edirne, the building was largely completed in 1914 but entered service in 1930 because of the war and the events that followed; today it is used by the Faculty of Fine Arts of Trakya University.

The Lausanne Monument and Square in the station garden were completed in 110 days and opened on 19 July 1998. The nearby National Struggle and Lausanne Museum exhibits documents and objects related to the treaty. Museum hours can change, so confirm with a current source before you go.

If you would rather not walk, there are taxis and city public transport. The Pazarkule border gate is about 5–7 km away and Kapıkule about 17–19 km; travellers arriving from Europe via Pazarkule pass through Karaağaç first, then cross the bridge to reach Kaleiçi.

A day in Karaağaç: a suggested order

Karaağaç can easily be seen in half a day. After breakfast in Kaleiçi, walking to the Meriç Bridge and stopping at the pavilion in its middle, then continuing along the Karaağaç road to see the old station building and the Lausanne Monument, is a classic order. If the museum is open, an hour is enough to see the treaty documents.

In the afternoon, sitting by the river and returning to Kaleiçi, crossing the bridge once more in the late afternoon light, completes the day.

Staying in Kaleiçi when visiting Karaağaç

The guesthouse has four room types: Standard (22 m², 2 guests), Deluxe (28 m², 2 guests, balcony), Suite (38 m², 3 guests, balcony and bathtub) and Family room (42 m², 4 guests). All rooms have Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a TV and a minibar; breakfast is included. There is no private car park, but as the guesthouse is on İzmir Caddesi, finding a space nearby is usually easy.

For a Karaağaç visitor, the biggest benefit of staying in Kaleiçi is combining both banks of the city comfortably on the same day: the Selimiye and the bazaar in the morning, the bridge and Karaağaç in the afternoon, the courtyard again in the evening. The quarter is described on our Edirne old town stay page.
