For a cafe break in Kaleiçi, Edirne's old town, Komşu Konak is a courtyard on the district's outer edge at İzmir Caddesi No 18, within walking distance of the historic bazaars and mosques. As the Ali Paşa Bazaar is about 5 minutes and the Selimiye Mosque 12–15 minutes away, the guesthouse falls right in the middle of a Kaleiçi walk. Kaleiçi is Edirne's old quarter, known for its grid-plan streets. For a full stay in the district, see our Edirne old town guesthouse page.
What is Kaleiçi in Edirne, and where does it begin?
Kaleiçi is Edirne's old quarter, which grew up inside the city walls dating from the Roman period. Although only fragments such as the Macedonian Tower remain of the walls today, the district is easily distinguished from the rest of the city by its streets crossing at right angles and its old Edirne houses. Most of the houses in Kaleiçi were rebuilt after a fire in the early 20th century; shuttered wooden windows and red-and-white façades are traces of that period.
The guesthouse is on İzmir Caddesi, on the outer edge of the district. The Macedonian Tower is about 390 metres (5–7 minutes) and the Great Synagogue about 510 metres (7–9 minutes) away.

Where to take a break on a walk through Kaleiçi
A classic route through Kaleiçi and its surroundings starts at the Selimiye Mosque, stops at the Üç Şerefeli Mosque and the Old Mosque, continues with the Bedesten and the Ali Paşa Bazaar and then enters the lanes of Kaleiçi. This route is a walk of about 3–4 km and fills half a day with photo stops.
The guesthouse is at the Kaleiçi end of this line. Sitting in the courtyard after visiting the mosques in the morning and before going down to the bazaar, or after leaving the bazaar, is a natural break that splits the walk in two.
| Stop | Distance | Walk |
|---|---|---|
| Ali Paşa Bazaar | ~350 m | 5 min |
| Macedonian Tower | ~390 m | 5–7 min |
| Great Synagogue | ~510 m | 7–9 min |
| Old Mosque and Bedesten | ~630 m | 8–10 min |
| Selimiye Mosque | ~950 m | 12–15 min |
| Meriç Bridge | ~2 km | 25–30 min |
A mansion courtyard in the historic fabric of Kaleiçi
With its red-and-white façade, shuttered wooden windows and brick arch, the guesthouse carries the architectural character of Kaleiçi. The plan with an inner hall (sofa), the bay windows (cumba) and entrances opening onto a courtyard, which the Kültür Portalı highlights in its description of Edirne houses, are shared features of this fabric.
Inside, the vine arbour, the lawned courtyard, the blue-walled staircase and the lanterns await you; on rainy days, the glass-roofed section and the lounge with its wooden ceiling. The vine-covered outer staircase and façade also attract those who want to take photos; the photo corners are on our Edirne photo spots page.

The best times for a break in Kaleiçi
The Selimiye and the bazaars come to life after 09:00; at midday and on weekend afternoons the number of visitors to Kaleiçi rises. Those who visit the mosques in the morning can come back to the breakfast table, open until 13:00; for those returning from the bazaar, 15:00–17:00 is the most relaxed time for a break in the courtyard.
As tourist visits to the Selimiye are restricted at prayer times, especially during Friday noon prayers, spending that hour in the courtyard keeps your route on track.
- Morning route: Selimiye → Üç Şerefeli → Old Mosque, then a courtyard break
- Afternoon: the Ali Paşa Bazaar and the Bedesten, then a courtyard break
- Friday: rest in the courtyard during noon prayers
- Late afternoon: the lantern-lit courtyard, then the illuminated Selimiye
Coming to Kaleiçi by car
The inner lanes of Kaleiçi are narrow and most are one-way; rather than driving in, it is easier to park on the outer edge and walk. As the guesthouse is on the outer edge, on İzmir Caddesi, you do not need to enter the inner lanes. There is no private car park; finding a space on the street or nearby is usually easy.

A day for guests staying in Edirne's Kaleiçi
Guests staying at the guesthouse start the day with the spread breakfast between 09:00 and 13:00 and can come back to the courtyard to rest between sights. Leaving the souvenirs bought at the bazaar in the room during the day and walking to the illuminated Selimiye in the evening is the most practical side of staying in Kaleiçi.
If you are thinking of an evening table beyond breakfast and the cafe, our Edirne private dining page describes the dinner planned in advance.
