Edirne Engagement Party Venue: A Promise and Engagement in a Kaleiçi Courtyard

As an engagement party venue in Edirne, Komşu Konak hosts the promise (söz) and engagement (nişan) ceremonies at which two families come together, in its historic courtyard in Kaleiçi. It offers a scale larger than a living room and far more intimate than a crowded hall: the rings are exchanged under the vine arbour, and the table is set in the lawned courtyard or under the glass roof. All our event options are on our Edirne event venue page.

Promise and engagement in Edirne: tradition meets today

The promise is a gathering, usually with fewer people, at which the two families confirm the decision to marry in the presence of the elders. The engagement is a larger celebration at which the rings are exchanged and relatives and close friends are invited. According to the Edirne records on the Kültür Portalı, when asking for a bride's hand in the region, the phrase "by the command of God and the word of the Prophet" is used; many families remember this sentence as the most emotional moment of the day.

At the guesthouse we prepare the same courtyard for both ceremonies with a different layout. For a promise, a conversation-focused sitting of a few tables is enough, while for an engagement the ring table, the congratulations area and the refreshment table are planned separately. Families decide which traditions are followed; we arrange the space and timing accordingly.

A typical engagement flow at the guesthouse

An engagement that starts in the afternoon usually fits into three to four hours. The order below is an example; we change the times together as the families wish.

  • Welcome: guests are welcomed by the families at the courtyard gate, and tea and coffee are served under the arbour.
  • Introductions and conversation: the elders of the two families meet at the tables under the glass roof or the arbour.
  • Ring ceremony: in front of the red-and-white façade, a family elder puts on the rings and cuts the ribbon.
  • Congratulations and gifts: guests congratulate the couple in turn, and gifts of jewellery are presented.
  • Table: a seated meal or a sweet and savoury refreshment table is served.
  • Cake and family photos: after the cake is cut, group photos are taken by the brick arch and on the staircase.

Set-up options at an Edirne engagement venue

Each corner of the courtyard suits a different crowd and mood. Once we have your guest list and date, we choose together which area suits you.

  • Vine arbour: for a shaded ring table and a long table in summer and early autumn.
  • Lawned courtyard: open space for standing congratulations, the gift line and family photos.
  • Glass-roofed section: semi-covered; the safe option on cool evenings and in case of rain.
  • Indoor lounge: stone and brick walls, a wooden ceiling; a warm setting for winter engagements and small promise gatherings.

Choosing the season and time for an engagement in Edirne

From May to the end of September the courtyard is at its best. In summer, moving the engagement to late afternoon or evening to avoid the midday heat eases things for both guests and photo light. In transitional months such as October and April we keep the glass-roofed section ready; for winter engagements the indoor lounge and the glass-roofed section are used together, and the lanterns and crystal chandelier complete the evening light.

Engagement table, cake and decoration: what we plan together

At the quote stage we discuss the menu, seating plan, where the cake will come from and when it is served, the extent of the decoration and the place of the photo corner one by one. The red-and-white façade, shuttered wooden windows and brick arch already take on most of the decoration; most families only add table flowers, a ring tray and a name board.

If the marriage proposal has not been made yet, we suggest not squeezing it into the same week as the engagement. For the surprise moment, our Edirne marriage proposal page offers separate planning.

When is an engagement held, and how many guests are invited?

The engagement is usually held a few weeks to a few months after the promise or the asking for her hand, and a few months before the wedding. Families mostly prefer spring and autumn weekends. The number of guests depends on the size of the family; an engagement with close family and friends usually stays between 20 and 40 guests.

The guesthouse courtyard is made for this scale. A large list of relatives may need a bigger venue; if you send your list, we will tell you clearly from the start whether it fits.

Engagement costs: what is bought, and who pays?

How engagement costs are shared varies from region to region and family to family. In many regions the engagement ceremony is held at the bride's family home or at a venue arranged by the bride's family, while the rings and jewellery come from the groom's side; but today many families share the costs. The healthiest way is for the families to discuss this openly in advance.

The table below summarises the main items of an engagement. We state in writing in the quote what comes from us and what from you.

Is there an outdoor shoot at an engagement?

Yes, in recent years many couples have a short outdoor shoot on the engagement day or a few days before. The lanes of Kaleiçi, the area around the Selimiye and the Meriç Bridge are the best-known photo spots in the city; at the guesthouse, the brick arch, the wooden staircase and the carriage are ready-made corners.

Doing the shoot before the ceremony avoids squeezing the hours on the engagement day. Photo corners and light hours are on our Edirne outdoor photoshoot page.

Chance of rain and accommodation for families from afar

In Edirne, spring showers and autumn chills can affect the engagement day. So alongside every courtyard plan, a layout under the glass roof or in the indoor lounge is also prepared; we make the final decision together a day before the ceremony based on the forecast.

Relatives coming from other cities can stay at the same address. Our accommodation options include Standard, Deluxe, Suite and a four-person Family room; a spread breakfast between 09:00 and 13:00 is included with the stay.
